YouTube Shorts are short-form videos designed to be easily consumed on mobile devices.

Shorts are less than 60 seconds long and often feature quick cuts, catchy trendy music, and engaging visuals.

What music creators want for YouTube shorts?

I wanted to know what background music people want for their Shorts videos? So I spoke to some of our clients.

It came down to this:

People want catchy and engaging music for YouTube shorts.

Our research shows that YouTube shorts that are between 15 and 20 seconds long often perform well, so in the playlist I focused on the music clips that of that length or a bit longer (just to give your some editing options).

However, the ideal length of a short can depend on factors like the topic, your target audience, and current YouTube trends.

On top of that most people have mentioned that they’d want copyright free tracks, so they don’t have to worry about YouTube copyright claims.

All the music tracks listed here are both copyright and royalty free. *

* “Copyright free” means that these tracks are not registered in YouTube’s Content ID system, so you can use this music without having to worry about copyright claims.

“Royalty free” in this context means that music isn’t registered with any performance rights organizations (PROs), so you don’t have to obtain additional licenses if you want to re-use the same music in your new videos or if you want to broadcast your videos in public.

UPDATE:

It is now possible to upload Shorts of up to 3 min long, so you don’t need to stick to the 60 sec limit when choosing music for your Shorts videos.

However, according to Google, the Shorts with active Content ID will be blocked until the claim is resolved. While you can still resolve YouTube copyright claims as usual, it would be more efficient to either get your channel whitelisted in advance or use music that is not registered with Content ID.
