YouTube monetization requirements

If you want to start monetizing your channel you must follow YouTube monetization rules and guidelines.

You technically qualify for the monetization program when you meet these requirements:

✅ You live in a country where the YouTube Partner Program is available.

✅ Your channel had more than 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months.

✅ You have more than 1,000 subscribers.

But there is another important rule that nobody really talks about:

You must create videos that qualify for YouTube’s monetization.

Don’t confuse this with YouTube’s community guidelines and restricted content.

YouTube will accept a wide range of videos. You may be able to upload a video but it does not mean that video will automatically qualify for monetization.

If you don’t follow this crucial rule – your monetization application will be rejected!

“Reused content” is one of the common rejection reasons.

Let’s see what it means:

How to avoid your YouTube monetization application rejected due to reused content

Here’s the big secret:

YouTube wants you to create original content

Or at least something that looks original enough.

That is, ideally, YouTube would wants to use all original footage and sound.

Realistically speaking, unless you’re a prolific videographer AND a competent musician at the same time, that’s rather hard to do.

You still need to use stock footage and perhaps royalty free music to complement your original content.

And here’s the key word: to complement.

Simply put, YouTube doesn’t like videos created from 100% re-used stock content.

Not for the monetization, anyway.

Remember, YouTube CAN see and estimate how much of your content appears in other videos.

To avoid this, you need to balance your original content with “borrowed” or re-used, even properly licensed, stock content.

Once you are accepted into the monetization program, you may have more freedom to re-use other people’s content but before you do get accepted, there are certain video types you may want to avoid.

Be careful with these videos if you want to get accepted into YouTube monetization

Here are 5 types of videos you might want to avoid if you want your monetization application quickly approved by YouTube:

👎 1. Short videos compiled from other social media sites

Thinking about making a funny TikTok compilation? Think again.

💡 Do this instead:

You CAN make compilations, this isn’t against the rules.

However, instead of simply compiling the clips, make a reaction video or add your own comments.

👎 2. Music playlists

A playlist is essentially a collection of songs by other musicians (that is, not your own music).

If you’re thinking about combining some free no copyright music with generic stock footage clips, this may not work for monetization.

💡 Do this instead:

First of all, learn about how copyright works on YouTube.

If your video gets a copyright claim, it won’t be eligible for monetization even if your application is approved.

Here are some ideas how you can get your channel monetized with music videos:

✅ Stop using free, no copyright music tracks that everyone else is using. Use professional quality royalty free music, made specifically for commercial use.

✅ Make original music videos. Instead of using generic background loops or photo collages, make a story and use music as the background.

✅ Make music videos for specific use, like meditation and relaxation videos. Add your own voice and make them guided meditations to improve your chances not to get rejected for “reused content”. If meditation isn’t your thing, try workout videos, motivational videos, and so on.

👎 3. Mashups from your favorite shows

Similar to #1, you can’t just mash up together some clips from your favorite show and expect YouTube to let you monetize that.

💡 Do this instead:

Add commentary or critique. Review your favorite episode and tell your viewers why you like it. Rewrite a dialogue from your favorite scene and make your own voice over. Anything creative will do great!

👎 4. Overused free content

You should not use content that’s already been used by many other creators if you want to monetize your video.

💡 Do this instead:

If you must use a popular clip in your video, check if it appears in other videos. Use “Copyright” tab in your creative studio. If the content you’re using pops up in a considerable amount of other videos, it’s best not to use it.

👎 5. Promotion of somebody else’s videos

You should not use somebody else’s content even if you like it and only want to help promoting it. Even if you have the permission to use that content. These videos are not likely to get approved for monetization.

💡 Do this instead:

Do a review and tell your viewers why you like it.
